Man Seriously Injured In Jones Co. Wreck | Car leaves roadway, striking stumps and tree

An adult male driver of a Kia passenger car suffered what appeared to be serious injuries in an accident on Township Road in the Glade Community on Monday evening.

The vehicle left the roadway near the 500 block of Township Road in a sharp curve striking large tree stumps and a dead tree before coming to rest in the edge of the woods.  Volunteer firefighters and Medical First Responders from Glade Volunteer Fire & Rescue responded with Glade Rescue 1 and Engine 1 to the scene immediately as they were in their regular monthly meeting at the fire station which is less than two miles away.

The driver of the vehicle was extricated and transported by EMServ Ambulance Service to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

Two units from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department along with Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna also responded to the crash scene which closed the roadway to one lane of traffic for over thirty minutes.

Burn Ban Still In Effect VFD's Respond To Over 100 Calls In Ten Days

LAUREL–Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna is reminding residents that despite the rainfall received Tuesday night, that Jones County remains

A "dust devil" swirls as debris burns at a brush fire off of Emmy Drive in Laurel earlier this month. Units from the Laurel Fire Department and volunteer units from Calhoun, Soso, Pleasant Ridge, Hebron and Shady Grove battled the blaze which is still burning although contained.

under a Burn Ban.  “Rainfall totals last night ranged from nothing at all in some areas to one-eight of an inch in others,” notes McKenna.  “This did essentially nothing to help alleviate the fire danger and we already had a brush fire burning off of Magnolia Road just after 7:00 a.m. today.  It’s perilously dry and we only have limited chances of rain over the weekend so citizens are urged to please not conduct any outdoor burning.”

In the past ten days, Jones County volunteer fire departments have responded to over one hundred brush fire and burn ban violation calls.  “This call volume is running our volunteer firefighters into the ground,” adds McKenna.

“These men and women have jobs and families and the pace of calls is putting a tremendous strain on the volunteer fire department system in addition to costing departments additional money for fuel and equipment.  In addition, when these firefighters and fire apparatus are dedicated to a brush fire or burn ban violation call, they are unavailable to handle more serious calls such as house fires, vehicle accidents and medical calls.”  McKenna notes, “It will be a terrible thing if someone loses their life because firefighters were tied up on a preventable brush fire call and were unavailable to respond or too far away to get there in time to help someone trapped in a burning home or trapped in a crashed vehicle.”

Governor Haley Barbour has placed the entire State of Mississippi under a Burn Ban which will remain in effect as long as the dry conditions persist.  In addition, those who violate the Burn Ban may be issued a citation by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department with fines ranging from $100 to $500.

Jones County Baptist Association Resolution in Opposition to Casino Gambling

Jones County Baptist Association Adopts Resolution in Opposition to Casino Gambling

Whereas, gambling is built on a system that appeals to personal greed, that fosters deceit, that exploits those most vulnerable and at risk, particularly children and the poor, and

Whereas, gambling violates the 10th commandment against coveting and the biblical work ethic by encouraging individuals to think they can get something for nothing, thus minimizing personal initiative and responsibility, and

Whereas, gambling contributes to family instability, to economic hardship, and to increased crime rates in communities where gambling facilities are located, and

Whereas, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians are involved in construction of a casino in Jones County.

Be it therefore resolved,  that messengers of churches affiliated with the Jones County Baptist Association, meeting at Bethlehem Baptist Church on October 4, 2010, call on its member churches to actively oppose efforts to establish casino gambling in Jones County, and

Be it further resolved, that we acknowledge the sovereign status of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and affirm our desire to see the Choctaw people prosper through any and all legitimate and honorable options to casino gambling, and

Be it finally resolved, that we offer support and cooperation to fellow Christian believers in the Bogue Homa community as we seek to work together in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I-59; Hwy 49; Hwy 42; Hwy 98 Road Construction Updates via MDOT

Interstate 59 and 10 Pavement Restoration Project

Work is continuing on the Interstate 59 and Interstate 10 pavement restoration project in Forrest, Jones, Pearl River, and Jackson counties. $8.5 million project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders of Laurel, MS.  Most of the operations are currently in Forrest and Jones counties. Ramp and shoulder paving operations are currently being conducted in Forrest County around the intersection of I-59 and U.S. Highway 49 and along the northbound lanes of I-59

I-59 Work Continues

from the Forrest/Lamar county line up to the Evelyn Gandy Parkway. Grading operations are being conducted in the median along I-59 approximately 2500 feet south of the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport Exit. The project is scheduled for completion date near the end of November.

Interstate 59 Reconstruction Project:
MDOT is in the final phase of work on the $11.6 million Interstate 59 reconstruction project in Jones County, just north of the construction zone formerly known as the ‘S-Curve’.  The contract was awarded to Tanner Construction involving two miles of roadway on I-59 from Fourth Avenue to Chantilly Street.  Crews have finished the deck slab on bridges spanning Fourth Avenue, Masonite Road, and Walter’s Avenue.  They have recently completed driving piles for the bridge that spans Highway 15 (Cook Avenue).  Crews have now begun work along the Highway 84 section of the project to begin the substructure work in that area.

Crews will soon begin the lane widening process, which will leave 6 feet for an inside shoulder, two 12 feet travel lanes and 10 feet for the outside shoulder.  Crews have installed all retaining walls from Fourth Avenue to Walters Avenue.  These modular block walls allow MDOT to obtain the required slopes without acquiring additional right-of-way.  Three more walls are scheduled to be installed with one being at Highway15 and two more around the Highway 84 connection in the upcoming months.  This project is due to be completed in the spring of 2011.

Highway 42 East Widening Project:

The $13.5 million project Highway 42 East widening project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders this spring.  Crews will work to widen the existing two-lane section to four lanes between Corinth Road and Macedonia Road in Petal.  This construction project is scheduled for completion in May 2012.

Highway 49 ITS Project:
Work is continuing on an Intelligent Technology Systems (ITS) project to install fiber optic cables along U.S. Highway 49 from Hardy Street in Hattiesburg south to Elks Lake Road.  Webster Electric Company of Meridian, MS. was awarded the $800 thousand project which will integrate the signals into the existing ITS system on Highway 49 north of Hardy Street to Classic Drive. Once this phase of the project is completed, all of the signals on Highway 49 through Hattiesburg will be a part of the centralized ACTRA signal server located at the recently opened Hattiesburg Regional Traffic Management Center (TMC) at the District Six Headquarters.  MDOT monitoring staff will use the system to observe traffic flow that is displayed on a video wall and send pertinent information to the public via www.mstraffic.com.

U.S. Highway 98 Project in Hattiesburg:
MDOT is nearing completion of a comprehensive project involving six miles of U.S. Highway 98 West in Lamar County. The $ 7.5 million project, awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders, of Laurel, MS, involves work to resurface all lanes and pave the shoulders of the roadway starting at Weathersby Road and continuing west to Highway 589.  Work on the project will be limited during peak travel times, and crews will be conducting some of the work at night.  The project is scheduled for completion this fall.

Hattiesburg Pathway and Overpass Improvement Project:

Work has begun a comprehensive pathway project at U.S. Highway 49 between the Fourth Street Overpass to the Longleaf Trace Overpass adjacent to the University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg.  The $838,500 project was awarded to Coleman Hammons Construction Company of Brandon, Mississippi.  The project is scheduled for completion in November, 2010.

Vote for the Laurel S-Curve Reconstruction Project; Friday Rally Planned

LAUREL, MISS., As a finalist in America’s Transportation Award competition, the public is invited to an informational rally promoting the Interstate 59 S-Curve Reconstruction Project in Laurel in a national online voting contest. The rally will be held at Laurel City Hall, Friday, October 8 at 10:00 a.m. and will be hosted by representatives of the City of Laurel and MDOT.

After winning a regional award, the Laurel S-Curve Reconstruction Project recently became a finalist for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ competition, which is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO),

MDOT reconstructed and realigned a 3,700-foot segment of I-59 through Laurel, Mississippi, eliminating the notorious Laurel S-Curve, which had one of the highest crash rates in the state.  The reconstructed segment crosses six local streets and the Norfolk Southern Railroad, requiring a 1,980-foot-long, six-lane bridge, along with a total of 1,350 feet of elevated ramp structures, two on-ramps, and one off-ramp.

“This project has dramatically improved safety and traffic flow through the area,” said MDOT District Six Construction Engineer Red Stringfellow.  “The community had input into the project design and it was ultimately delivered under budget, due to a redesign effort to find more cost-effective materials and construction methods.”

As its name indicates, the People’s Choice Award is selected by the public by voting online at www.americastransportationaward.org. Winners of the People’s Choice Award and the Grand National Prize will receive a $10,000 cash prize, to be donated to a charity or scholarship fund chosen by the winning state. Awards will be presented at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi, in October.

Laurel Mayor Melvin Mack encourages everyone to show support for this great project by taking the time to vote online in the coming days.  Mack said, “I am elated about Laurel being selected as a finalist in the People’s Choice Award and I am asking all friends and residents of Laurel to vote.  There is no limit to the number of times you can cast a vote.”

The People’s Choice Rally will feature a presentation by Mayor Mack and MDOT Construction Engineer Red Stringfellow, who was involved in the design and implementation of the S-Curve project.  The public is invited to attend the October 8 rally, which will provide information about the People’s Choice Award and feature a number of prize give-aways.

The public is encouraged to vote online as often as possible from now until Monday, October 18.
