JCJC hosts State Guitar Festival

ELLISVILLE – Guitarists across the state will convene at Jones County Junior College for the annual State Guitar Festival, on Friday, November 5 through Saturday, November 6.  The two-day festival is the largest guitar festival in the state offering high school and college students a series of classes, lectures, competitions, and recitals led by renowned regional and international artists.

JCJC guitar instructor, Dr. Michael Boyd is excited to have as special guest artist for the festival, 2009 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition winner, Florian Larousse.

“This is the first time JCJC has hosted this event and to have an artist like Larousse headlining the event makes this very special,” said Dr. Boyd.  “The opportunity to see an international guitarist of his caliber in this area is not one to be missed.”

The public is invited to attend all recitals during the two-day event, free of charge.  A chamber music recital will be held at 1 p.m. in the JCJC chapel on Friday.  Later in the chapel at 7 p.m. Friday, participating faculty will showcase their talents.    Saturday’s 7 p.m. concert will feature Larousse in the JCJC chapel.

Other guest artists and instructors include Dr. Nicholas Ciraldo, Dr. John Ingwerson, Mitch Brantley, Trevor Hunt, Amy Houghton, Barry Hause and Dr. Kristen Johnson.

The Festival which is co-sponsored by USM, Holmes Community College, Meridian CC, Hinds CC, Belhaven University and William Carey University, begins with registration at 8 a.m. on Friday in the JCJC fine arts auditorium lobby.  Students who want to participate must pre-register by contacting the JCJC Fine Arts Department at 601-477-4094 or email mike.boyd@jcjc.edu.

JCJC’s Madrigals and More Concert at Laurel’s First Presbyterian Church

ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Fine Arts department will be performing in a special concert, co-sponsored by the First-Trinity Presbyterian Church of Laurel, on Tuesday, October19, at 7 p.m. This concert will feature music primarily from the Renaissance and Baroque periods and will highlight the work of many chamber groups and soloists from Jones County Junior College.  The concert is open to the public and free of charge.

The ‘Madrigals and More’ concert will feature the JC Voices-Madrigal Singers under the direction of Dr. Susan Smith. In addition to student performers, the concert will also feature faculty performers Dr. Michael Boyd (harp-theorbo), Mr. Jeff Brown (marimba), Mrs. Kay Guiles (organ), Dr. Victoria Johnson (harpsichord), and Mrs. Meri Newell (recorder).

Student performers and groups include the Bobcat Brass, under the direction of Mr. Patrick Richards, the Renaissance Quartet, and duets featuring lute and recorder.  The audience will enjoy works from well-known composers such as Bach, Dowland, Morley, and Buxtehude, as well as works from lesser-known composers Bannister, Aubert, and Johnson.  For more information call the JCJC Fine Arts department at 601-477-4094.
